January 16 Sanctuary Committee Update

The Sanctuary Committee has been working with the interfaith Asylum/Sanctuary Committee to come up with other ways we can be of help to the immigrant community in our area. We have found a few people who have committed to sponsoring asylum seekers in their homes and continue to look for ways that people can support the sponsoring families. To date, we have one family who has welcomed an Asylum seeker from Central America, and three others who are in the process of becoming sponsors.

During the week of Christmas, we became aware of another way we can support asylum seekers. AMOR, Alliance to Mobilize our Resistance, started bonding out asylum seekers from the Wyatt Detention Center in Central Falls. Bonding out is the process of paying the bond money these folks need to be able to go free. Once bonded out, people need a temporary place to stay while travel plans can be made to get them to their waiting families. There are a few opportunities for those who are interested to help out.

First, we need to raise money for the bonds. These are arbitrarily set by a judge, and can range from $1500 to $40,000. If you would like to donate, AMOR has a go fund me here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-amor

Second, we need people who can temporarily house people while travel plans are made to get these asylum seekers where they are trying to get to.

We will be setting up a page for you to sign up for this in the near future, but until then, if this interests you, please email firstusanctuary@gmail.com and let me know you are interested.

We will also need help from people who can translate, drive and offer other support services.

Since Christmas Eve, three people have been bonded out, with plans for more as soon as possible.

The Asylum/Sanctuary Committee will be meeting this Thursday, January 16th, 7 pm at First Unitarian Church of Providence if you are interested in hearing more or helping us plan more extensively.

With hopes for a brighter new year,

Katherine Ahlquist

Hello Side with Love Friend!

There are a few extra things you can do this week, one is sign a petition to stop sheriffs at prisons from profiting from video conferencing. You can find out more about that here:

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee has a petition asking Congress to oppose bigotry. You can sign that letter here: https://www.uusc.org/initiatives/take-action-urge-congress-to-oppose-bigotry/  You don’t have to be a Unitarian Universalist to sign.

AMOR continues to raise money to bond out asylum seekers from the Wyatt Detention Center in Central Falls. You can donate money here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-amor

Thanks for all that you do to make this world a better place!

Hope to see you out there somewhere,
